Urbandale Farm Up for Sale

Urbandale Farm Up for Sale

Lansing Urban Farm Project (LUFP) is in search of someone to take over care
and ownership of the farm property, formerly known as Urbandale Farm. The
farm sits on a quarter of an acre lot located at 705 South Hayford Avenue in
the heart of Lansing’s East Side. Urbandale Farm was established in 2009 as
an urban farm, a place to get fresh vegetables and the site of farmer training
and apprenticeship programs. Since that time the land has been cultivated
using natural growing practices and cared for with love through the collective
labor of dozens of gardeners and farmers. Now, over a decade later, LUFP feels
it is time for the land to be put into the hands of new leaders who can breathe
new life into the farm and guide it into a new vision for the future. Do you have
a vision for a farm or agriculture based project, but lack the land and support
to make that vision a reality? If so this opportunity could be for you! Read on
for more details.
The Urbandale Farm Property
Ownership of land is one of the biggest barriers for people looking to start a
farm. Building infrastructure is another big hurdle. However, because this land
has already been established as a working farm, it already includes a number
of important pieces of infrastructure that will help a new farmer get started.
The farm property includes:
● A small 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house (730 square feet) at 653 S. Hayford
that sits on a 1⁄4 acre lot
● 1⁄2 acre of land with twenty five 100 foot raised garden beds and some
perennial plants already established (asparagus, lavender, etc)
● One 30' x 48' hoop house (unheated greenhouse) for season extension
● One metal shed filled with assorted farm tools
● Covered washing station for processing and packing produce after harvest
● Lean to structure that was used as the Urbandale Farm stand
● Water and electricity on site
● Fully fenced in perimeter with 5 and 6 ft. fencing
The land itself cannot legally be developed and must remain in use for
agricultural purposes according to city ordinance. This covenant will be

included in the purchase agreement and property deed. The market value of
the property including the house, land, and outbuildings was assessed at
$65,000 as of January 2023. We understand the market value of the property
will be a barrier for some individuals, groups or organizations, but we want to
hear from you if you are interested!
One goal of the Lansing Urban Farm Project is to reduce barriers that stand in
the way of the success of urban farmers. LUFP is committed to working with
those interested to negotiate a price and terms of sale that are equitable
and financially accessible. We have identified a variety of ways in which we
might do this and are happy to discuss these possibilities with potential
buyers.
